Ads that did so well they got banned.

In the early days of Nike, their American agency came up some dauntingly good lines:  ‘There Is No Finish Line” and of course ‘Just Do It”. And many others. So when the brief to work on Nike landed on my desk in London, I was somewhat intimidated.

However, I managed to break through my writer’s block and wrote some all-text ads for Nike’s running shoes. Later, I was briefed to create ads to announce that Nike was now the official boot of the England rugby team. The solution was a pair of one-liners that captured quintessential rugger bugger humour. The venerable Rugby Football Union banned the ads, with the result Nike got £000s of free national newspaper coverage
and PR.
